Lithuania Night!!!

Mission Lithuania:  Complete

Situation:  Semi-Successful

It was a rough night to say the least.  My husband was not feeling well at all, so his last minute dessert choice was never made...it would've been the best part of the meal! To make things worse, I just felt unprepared.  I had wanted to make a Lituanian craft with Aliyah, but ran out of time.  The history and culture was so much fun to learn about.  The meal...not the best.  Clearly my husband and I are not expert chefs, let alone an expert Lituanian cook!

The bread was the coolest part of the meal to learn about, but the ONLY Dark Rye I could find was already sliced from Kroger.  A bit of a let down:( But I was surprised that dark rye is not as strong as light rye!

The cold beetroot soup was beautiful, but kindof hard to swallow.  Litterally, we had to force ourselves to eat it, and there was SOOOOOOO much of it.  We decided that it is extremely healthy, so we need to eat it all...It may be my fault.  We are absolutely not picky eaters around here, but one thing we both hate is cucumbers...and I followed the recipe and put them in! Big mistake!

Our main dish, which is supposed to basically be a boiled meatball surrounded by a potato mixture, completely disolved in the water.  All that was left was a boiled meatball...gross!  Thank goodness I still had some left, so we ended up baking them instead.  After that, they actually turned out pretty yummy! We made a bacon, mushroom, and sour cream gravy.  Very good!

Our side dish reminded me of a cold potato salad with lots of stuff in it.  We really liked this, even though it looked a little weird.

We had wanted to try Lituanian beer or wine, but we couldn't fine any. I even looked on line to see if I could order some! We had whole milk instead, since it's the most popular beverage in Lithuania.

Please see the following document I made with pictures and research and recipes and all the awesome stuff we learned about this amazing little country!  Next time we are hoping to have music and a craft and a DESSERT!

All American Foods

As I have been preparing for next Saturday, Lithuania Night!!!, I remembered a list I had made a few weeks ago...a friend of mine was having her brother and his new bride (from England) as houseguests. She had recently been to England for the wedding and had tried many foods, so she wanted to prepare some American foods in return. This was intriguing to me, so I researched a bit to come up with a list of foods that we claim here in The United States. I started wondering what foods our neighbors would find if they researched our country for their own Ethnic Food Night!! Now, of course, we have a very mixed culture, and many of our foods come from the various countries our ancestors originate, but here is the list I came up with: All American Foods Breakfast: Biscuits and gravy Waffles Hashbrowns Scrambled eggs Pancakes Donuts Bacon (ours is different, isn't it?) French toast Lunch/dinner Hot dogs/ burgers/ corndogs! Philly cheesesteaks  Rueben sandwich Cob salad Buffalo wings Baked beans Cornbread Clam chowder Fajitas Po boy sandwich Chili Fried chicken Mashed potatoes Corn on the cob Greenbean casserole Sweet potatoes Pulled pork Nachos Cheesy potatoes Desserts: Rootbeer Floats Vernors floats Pumpkin pie Pecan pie rice pudding Ice cream Fruit pies Chocolate cake? Banana cream pudding

Welcome!

Welcome to my new blog! My husband and I decided that once a month we will do an Ethnic Food Night together as a family.  We are so excited to learn about other countries and to share this with our daughter, who is now almost three.

I am secretly hoping to get my husband in the mood to actually GO see the world! I have been to 13 countries and 35 states, myself.   I mean I've had a Passover dinner in Israel, been cave tubing in Belize, stayed in a castle in Ireland, and walked in parks filled with flamingos in Sweden!!! How can I NOT want to travel more after that? Shannon's desire to travel is minimal. I'm pretty sure my husband has been to Canada, and maybe about 12 states, but mostly for business.  Isn't he just so deprived???

Anyhow, we started by each picking a country from Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and two Native American regions from North America.  Also, we threw in Australia and New Zealand.  I plan to post a link to the "research" I do on each country and blog about the activities we do and the recipes we try.  Here is the tentative schedule (S=Shannon's choice and C=my choice)

April: Lithuania (S)
May: Austria (C)
June: Nigeria (S)
July: Egypt (C)
August: Thailand (S)
September: Russia (C)
October: Uruguay (S)
November: Venezuela (C)
December: Too much going on this month...Though, Christmas around the world sounds fun!
January: Southwest Indians (Souix in particular for some reason...S)
February: Southeast Indians (C)
March: Australia and New Zealand
